In Nod To Reggie Wayne, Vontae Davis Arrives At Colts Camp In Style

On Saturday morning at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, the site of this year’s Colts training camp, a loud rumble broke the silence as a vehicle resembling the Batmobile made its way up the drive. It bypassed the players’ parking lot and pulled up in front of the practice facility where the media was gathered out front.

Cornerback Vontae Davis hopped out, took off his helmet, and exclaimed, “Home sweet home.”

It was a bold entrance. But for Davis, it wasn’t about drawing attention to himself. It was about tradition and honoring a Colts legend.

“I just wanted to pull up in style, give a tribute to the great Reggie Wayne – it’s training camp and everybody is excited, the fans are excited. Shout out to Reggie Wayne.”

The former Colts wide receiver had a habit of making a statement when he reported to training camp. There was the helicopter, the military vehicle, the dump truck, the IndyCar…

Since Wayne’s departure following the 2014 season, no one has really stepped in to fill that void – until today.

“It was my idea,” Davis said.

He didn’t tell anyone he was doing it – not even Wayne.

“It’s a surprise. He’s going to smile. He’ll get a kick out of it.”

But, what is it?

“It’s a Polaris Slingshot. It’s blue – Colts blue.”

Described as an open-air roadster, the Polaris Slingshot is a three-wheel motorcycle that performs much like an NFL cornerback.

“It’s pretty fast,” said Davis. “It’s very acrobatic. You can go around corners. It’s low traction to the ground.”

For the Colts veteran, now starting his 9th season (and 6th with the Colts), it’s an exciting time. So, why not start things off that way?

“Every year it gets more and more fun because you’ve got a chance to come in and build a camaraderie with your teammates,” he said. “And football, it’s a fun sport.”

But have no doubt, Davis and his teammates are ready to do some serious work.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do – a lot of young guys,” he said. “There’s some new faces on defense. We’re excited about where we can go this year. We’re ready to get to work.”

And when he puts on his football helmet, he knows the role he needs to play.

“Me playing in this system for a long time, I’ve got the veteran experience to help these young guys. The defensive back room, they’re going to look up to me and I’m here to do everything I can.”

Whether it’s leadership on and off the field, or a little fun at training camp, Davis is always quick to step up.

“Somebody had to do it. Why not me?”

It’s time – time for the Colts to turn the key, start the engine, and put last season in the rear view mirror.

It’s go time.

And Vontae Davis is ready to go.

“I’m optimistic. I’m excited. It’s a new year.”
